Correlation between tangential distortion of the outer retinal layer and metamorphopsia in patients with epiretinal membrane
Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology Jan 20, 2021
Sakai D, Takagi S, Hirami Y, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective study to assess tangential morphological changes in the outer retina and evaluate their association with the degree of metamorphopsia in patients with idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM). The sample consisted of patients with idiopathic ERM who underwent vitrectomy between January 2018 and December 2019. Participants in the study were 76 patients (78 eyes; 49 females; mean age, 67.9 [± standard deviation, 7.5 years]). The authors observed that the ERM appeared to distort the outer retinal layer toward the temporal side of the fovea. The tangential distortion of this layer has been linked to the degree of metamorphopsia, implying that misalignment of parafoveal photoreceptors causes metamorphopsia in ERM patients.
