Correlation between metamorphopsia and disorganization of the retinal inner layers in eyes with diabetic macular edema
Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology Aug 24, 2019
Nakano E, et al. - Researchers sought for factors that are associated with the severity of metamorphopsia secondary to diabetic macular edema (ME). They evaluated optical coherence tomography parameters including disorganization of the retinal inner layers (DRIL) for this work. Among 37 eyes of 37 consecutive patients with diabetic ME or resolved diabetic ME, 20 eyes (54%) exhibited metamorphopsia. The analysis revealed a significant association of the DRIL length with the severity of metamorphopsia secondary to diabetic ME. In eyes with diabetic ME, they observed a key role of the inner retinal layer in metamorphopsia development. They recommend carefully considering metamorphopsia when treating diabetic ME as its severity has been found to be independent of visual acuity and ME status.
