Correlation between irreversible organ damage and the quality of life of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus: The kyoto lupus cohort survey
Lupus Jun 20, 2021
Takase Y, Iwasaki T, Doi H, et al. - This study sought to verify the association between irreversible organ damage and the quality of life (QOL) by considering the unique factors of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Researchers intended to clarify the relationship using SLE-specific QOL assessment tools. They further distinguished which type of organ damage is adversely correlated with the QOL. A questionnaire-based survey of outpatients with SLE at Kyoto University Hospital was performed and irreversible organ damage was assessed using the SLICC/ACR damage index (SDI). Researchers conducted multiple linear regression analyses to analyze the associations between the total SDI score and each QOL score, and between each SDI item/system score and each QOL score. A total of 265 patients were included in this study. This study’s findings illustrate that the QOL of patients with SLE is negatively associated with irreversible organ damage. The findings demonstrate that musculoskeletal damage is adversely associated with the health-related QOL, particularly the physical and role/social QOL.
