Contrast‐induced acute kidney injury in patients undergoing TAVI compared with coronary interventions
Journal of the American Heart Association Aug 21, 2020
Venturi G, Pighi M, Pesarini G, et al. - Researchers examined the disparities in the effect of contrast medium on the occurrence of contrast‐induced acute kidney injury (CI‐AKI) in patients receiving transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) or a coronary angiography/percutaneous coronary intervention (CA/PCI). This study involved 489 patients treated with TAVI (50.1%) and 488 patients who had undergone CA/PCI (49.9%). Findings revealed less frequent development of CI‐AKI among patients undergoing TAVI vs those receiving a CA/PCI, despite a worse‐risk profile. Due to the hemodynamic alterations after aortic valve replacement, the influence of contrast delivery on kidney function in patients managed with TAVI may be better tolerated.
