Contraceptive choices in the immediate postpartum period in women with cardiac disease
American Journal of Cardiology Jan 30, 2019
Sobhani NC, et al. - In women with maternal cardiac disease (MCD), researchers sought to characterize contraceptive choices in the immediate postpartum period. In addition, they assessed issues with specific contraceptive plans. They categorized contraceptive plans into highly reliable methods (sterilization or long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods) or less reliable methods (non-LARC methods or no contraception). This study included 254 women, 40% of whom planned to use highly reliable methods, and 60% planned to use less reliable methods. There was a higher likelihood of women with cardiomyopathy choosing a highly reliable method of contraception, which was reassuring, given the greater risk of poor pregnancy outcome with this diagnosis. The two contraceptive groups displayed no differences in other cardiac diagnoses.
