Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion vs multiple daily insulin injections in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus who fast during Ramadan: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Apr 12, 2019

Gad H, et al. - In patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) who fast during Ramadan, researchers analyzed the benefits and risks of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) vs multiple daily injections (MDI). This systematic review and meta-analysis included 306 full-text studies. Change in glycemic control (HbA1c) between CSII and MDI was not significantly different. In patients with T1DM on MDI during Ramadan, there was no change in weight or lipid profile. Insufficient data were available to evaluate the impact on glucose profiles and the incidence of hypoglycemia or diabetic ketoacidosis in CSII or MDI patients during Ramadan. Overall, the investigators concluded that studies evaluating the effect of CSII or MDI in T1DM patients fasting during Ramadan are limited to observational studies and exhibit no difference in HbA1c, weight, or lipid change during Ramadan.
