Consumer perspective from people with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) on BPD management – How are the Australian NHMRC BPD guidelines faring in practice?
Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Nov 20, 2020
Proctor JM, Lawn S, McMahon J., et al. - Researchers aimed at determining the Australian consumer perspectives concerning borderline personality disorder (BPD) management, and any changes in these perspectives between 2011‐2017. In addition, they sought to comment on how NHMRC BPD Guidelines that were released 2013 are doing in practice. A 75‐question survey, which was delivered online across Australia, was completed by individuals who identified a BPD diagnosis in 2011 (N = 153) and 2017 (N = 424), yielding comparative datasets to determine changes in consumer perspective on BPD management. Analysis revealed that in 2017, increased BPD‐literacy and help‐seeking behaviors were reported among consumers, offering opportunity for health professionals to build stronger therapeutic relationships. Findings suggest no widespread practical implementation of the Guidelines and highlight the necessity for more health professional education, updated Guidelines, funding and strategies to embed these Guidelines into practice.
