Conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia and carcinoma: Distinct clinical and histological features in relation to human papilloma virus status
British Journal of Ophthalmology Oct 28, 2019
Ramberg I, Toft PB, Georgsen JB, et al. - As the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and carcinoma (cSCC) development remains unclear, researchers studied the prevalence of HPV in a nationwide cohort and described clinical and histopathological characteristics in relation to HPV status. From 1980 to 2016, all cases of CIN and cSCC in Denmark were included. For HPV analysis, 112 primary tumours and 33 recurrent tumours were involved. Data reported that HPV16 was the most prevalent genotype. HPV-positive tumours patients were significantly younger and had a higher recurrence vs HPV-negative tumours patients. Findings suggested an association of HPV-positive tumours with a positive p16 IHC and a non-keratinising morphology. Distinct clinical and histopathological characteristics linked to HPV status in cSCC were described in this analysis. The finding in this material of transcriptionally active HPV supports a causal role of HPV in a cSCC subset.
