Conditioned open-label placebo for opioid reduction after spine surgery: A randomized controlled trial
Pain Jun 01, 2021
Flowers KM, Patton ME, Hruschak VJ, et al. - Researchers conducted this randomized control trial with the aim to determine if combining conditioning with an “open-label placebos” (OLPs) (COLP) in the immediate postoperative period could lower daily opioid use and postsurgical pain among patients recovering from spine surgery. Randomization of patients to COLP or treatment as usual was done, with both groups receiving unrestricted access to a typical opioid-based postoperative analgesic regimen. Relative to patients in the treatment as usual group, patients in the COLP group consumed nearly 30% less daily morphine milligram equivalents during POD 1 to 17. Overall findings suggest possible value of COLP as a potential adjuvant analgesic therapy to lower opioid consumption in the early postoperative period, without increasing pain.
