Complications of hemodialysis catheter bloodstream infections: Impact of infecting organism
American Journal of Nephrology Jul 03, 2019
Farrington CA, et al. - A prospective vascular access database from a large academic dialysis center was retrospectively analyzed by the researchers to determine if the clinical presentation or complications of catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) is influenced by the infecting organism type. Among catheter-dependent hemodialysis patients with suspected CRBSI, it was confirmed in 85% cases. Presentation with atypical symptoms was reported for S. epidermidis CRBSI. The need for hospitalization or intensive care admission was more likely in S. aureus CRBSI. The relatively uncommon occurrence of metastatic infection was reported. Rarely, CRBSI resulted in death.
