Completeness of salpingectomy intended for ovarian cancer risk reduction
Gynecologic Oncology Oct 18, 2019
Wong JWH, et al. - Females with no history of ovarian cancer, who were undergoing salpingo-oophorectomy at a single institution in Honolulu, Hawaii were recruited in this study in order to assess the completeness of salpingectomy proposed for ovarian cancer risk mitigation. A total of 107 ovaries were analyzed. This was the largest blinded study ever carried out to investigate ovaries for residual salpingeal tissue following salpingectomy. Moreover, this was the unique study to contrast learner vs attending outcomes in this setting. It was discovered that over 94% of salpingectomies led to the complete elimination of salpingeal tissue. Of the ovaries with residual salpingeal tissue, not a variation among surgeon level and surgery type was found, although, the study was not intended to identify this. For ovarian cancer risk mitigation, this study encourages the maintained clinical practice of prophylactic salpingectomy.
