Comparison of visual and anatomic outcomes following RRD surgery using 23-gauge vs 25-gauge vitrectomy: PRO study report no. 12
Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Feb 27, 2021
Starr MR, Yonekawa Y, Obeid A, et al. - Since most surgeons now utilize small-gauge (23- or 25-gauge) pars plana vitrectomy with or without scleral buckling for repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRD), in addition to primary scleral buckle, however, comparative data between the two gauges are inadequate, researchers sought to compare visual and anatomic outcomes following RRD surgery using 23-gauge vs 25-gauge vitrectomy. Single-surgery success was the primary outcome and postoperative complications were included in secondary outcomes. There were 1,932 eyes that satisfied the requirements for inclusion. In the primary repair of RRD, both 23- and 25-gauge vitrectomy systems have comparable anatomic and visual outcomes.
