Comparison of povidone-iodine and gentamicin soak as scleral buckle infection prophylaxis
Clinical Ophthalmology May 29, 2021
Lin X, Le B, Lee P, et al. - Researchers conducted this experimental study for determining the best method of antimicrobial prophylaxis against implanted material-associated infections in the setting of scleral buckle surgery. The two types of scleral buckle elements chosen for the research were the 3.5 mm x 0.75 mm 41-style solid silicone band (band) and 3 mm X 5 mm oval 506-style soft silicone sponge (sponge). When compared with the gentamicin solution, the povidone-iodine solution was significantly more effective at bacterial eradication. The authors suggest soaking the buckle element in 2– 3% povidone-iodine solution before placement and rinsing the ocular surface with the same solution after placement for all scleral buckle procedures.
