Comparison of laparoscopic 270° posterior partial fundoplication vs total fundoplication for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease: A randomized clinical trial
JAMA Jun 25, 2019
Håkanson BS, et al. - Via performing a double-blind, randomized clinical trial including 456 patients, researchers assessed the superiority of either partial fundoplication (PF) or total fundoplication (TF) in laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery. In both treatment groups, early postoperative dysphagia (6 weeks) was common, but then decreased towards normality. In the mean scoring of dysphagia for liquids at 6 weeks and for solid food at 12 months and 24 months, a minute but statistically significant difference in favor of PF was observed. Quality of life was reduced before surgery but then increased to normal values post-surgery and remained steady during 5-years’ follow-up; there was no difference between the groups. Overall, the investigators concluded that, although PF and TF could be recommended for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, PF might be superior by inducing less dysphagia.
