Comparison of cancer prevalence between patients with glomerulonephritis and the general population at the time of kidney biopsy
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Oct 25, 2019
Ryu J, Ryu H, Kim S, et al. - Given the association of glomerulonephritis (GN) with many solid and hematologic malignancies, researchers examined the cancer prevalence in patients with GN at the time of kidney biopsy. In addition, they compared the results to those of the general population. Among a total of 1,155 patients who were diagnosed with GN through kidney biopsy between 2003 and 2017, 29 patients had cancer. Patients with and without cancer had the mean age of 49 and 66 years, respectively. Male patients comprised 49.4% and 58.6% of the patients with and without cancer, respectively. The most common GN was immunoglobulin A nephropathy (37.9%), followed by membranous GN (13.5%), focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (9.7%), minimal change disease (9.2%), amyloidosis (1.2%). Malignancy was most commonly observed in correlation with amyloidosis (20.7%). Cancer was observed almost 28 times more than expected in patients with amyloidosis, and these patients showed higher cancer occurrence than patients with other GN. Three times greater cancer occurrence was noted in GN patients aged > 50 years relative to the general population.
