Comparison of bilateral medial rectus plication and resection for the treatment of convergence insufficiency-type intermittent exotropia
Acta Ophthalmologica Feb 15, 2019
Wang X, et al. - In this prospective study, 55 individuals were studied to assess the clinical consequences of bilateral medial rectus plication (BMRP) vs bilateral medial rectus resection (BMRR) for the treatment of convergence insufficiency (CI)-type intermittent exotropia (IXT). They measured the mean deviation at distance at 1 day postoperatively, +6.6 ± 5.6 prism diopters (PD) in the BMRP group, and +10.8 ± 9.3 PD in the BMRR group. They recorded a shorter operative time in the BMRP (12.9 ± 1.4 min) group as compared to the BMRR (14.7 ± 1.4 min) group. They reported a milder form of postoperative conjunctival swelling and redness in the BMRP group in comparison to another group. Hence, they suggested the BMRP surgery, an alternative procedure to BMRR for the treatment of CI-type IXT.
