Comparing healthcare resource utilization and costs for patients with normal tension glaucoma across levels of severity: A retrospective cohort study
Clinical Ophthalmology Feb 11, 2021
Beal B, Shih V, Campbell J, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective cohort study to estimate the healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) and costs for patients with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) as well as their payers across various levels of disease severity. Participants in the study were 6,330 US prevalent patients, 40 years or older on the index date with a diagnosis of NTG. The findings indicate that, relative to those with mild NTG, the patient and payer burden is substantially greater for those with serious illness. Additional HCRU and the related financial burden are linked to the excess burden. Compared with those with mild NTG, payers faced a much greater financial burden from patients with serious illness. Nearly half of the cost differences can be attributed to additional prescription use.
