Comparative effectiveness of injection therapies in rotator cuff tendinopathy: A systematic review, pairwise and network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Aug 06, 2018

Lin MT, et al. - Using pairwise and network meta-analysis, researchers compared the efficacy of diverse injections in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy. For this investigation, they searched PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus and Cochrane Library for studies published up to September 31, 2017 comparing injections including corticosteroid, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, hyaluronic acid, botulinum toxin, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and prolotherapy in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy. Findings revealed that corticosteroid was effective for short-term (3-6 weeks) but not long-term (over 24 weeks) pain reduction and functional improvement for patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy. In the long-term (over 24 weeks), PRP and prolotherapy might offer better outcomes.
