Comparative analysis of prognostic histopathologic parameters in subtypes of epithelioid pleural mesothelioma
Histopathology Mar 18, 2020
Bilecz A, Stockhammer P, Theegarten D, et al. - Researchers tried to find out the prognostic role of the five defined morphologies, the effect of the nuclear grading system and the mitosis‐necrosis score. This study included tumor specimens of 192 individuals with epithelioid malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) from five European centers. They ascertained nuclear grading and mitosis‐necrosis score and associated with clinicopathological parameters and overall survival. They further assessed digital slides of 55 independent cases from the cancer genome atlas database for external validation. Compared with those with solid or trabecular tumors, individuals with tubulopapillary or microcystic tumors displayed a greater enhancement in overall survival after receiving multimodal therapy. The data indicated that histologic subtypes of epithelioid MPM have a prognostic effect and might support to select individuals for intensive multimodal treatment approaches.
