Comorbidities of alopecia areata: A population‐based cohort study
Clinical and Experimental Dermatology Dec 11, 2020
Egeberg A, Anderson S, Edson‐Heredia E, et al. - In this population‐based cohort study, researchers sought to explore the temporal connection between alopecia areata (AA) diagnosis and comorbidity development in Denmark. A Danish nationwide register‐based cohort study was conducted on all people diagnosed with AA between 2007 and 2016 (n = 1,843), and each patient was matched for age and sex with 10 healthy controls. The risk of several comorbidities, most notably vitiligo, atopic dermatitis and Crohn disease, was significantly associated with the diagnosis of AA. Nevertheless, before AA diagnosis, the majority of patients tended to have acquired these comorbidities, indicating that a detailed screening of medical history by dermatologists at the initial visit might be sufficient.
