Comorbidities associated with higher von Willebrand factor (VWF) levels may explain the age-related increase of VWF in von Willebrand disease
British Journal of Haematology May 22, 2018
Atiq F, et al. - Researchers evaluated the relationship in patients with von Willebrand disease (VWD). They studied this association in patients with type 1 and type 2 VWD from the ‘WiN” study. Compared to patients type 1 VWD patients without hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cancer and thyroid dysfunction, von Willebrand factor (VWF) antigen (VWF:Ag) were higher in type 1 VWD patients these comorbidities (all corrected for age, sex and blood group). Findings did not suggest any association between comorbidities and VWF/FVIII levels or bleeding phenotype in type 2 VWD patients. An association of comorbidities with higher VWF and FVIII levels in type 1 VWD was seen and this could explain the age-related increase of VWF and FVIII levels.
