Colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy use among the average-risk population for colorectal cancer: A systematic review and trend analysis
Cancer Prevention Research Aug 26, 2019
Cardoso R, et al. - Given the importance of monitoring population-level colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy use in order to assess the future burden of colorectal cancer and guiding screening efforts, researchers analyzed the literature data on colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy use to update past reviews and examine time trends for different countries. They determined recent time trends for Germany and the United States by utilizing data from the German and European Health Interview Surveys and the National Health Interview Survey, respectively. A total of 23 new articles were identified via literature search, including 14 articles from the United States and 9 from Australia, Canada, England, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea. In the United States, Germany, and South Korea, high uptake and ongoing increased use of colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy was evident, but for the majority of countries, the use of colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy has either continued to be low or basically unknown.
