Cognitive performance declines in older adults with type 1 diabetes: Results from 32 years of follow-up in the DCCT and EDIC Study
The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Jun 23, 2021
Jacobson AM, Ryan CM, Braffett BH, et al. - The present study was conducted to evaluate outcomes from 32 years of follow-up in the diabetes control and complications trial (DCCT) and epidemiology of diabetes interventions and complications (EDIC) Study to evaluate cognitive performance declines in older adults with type 1 diabetes. Researchers recruited a total of 1,051 participants with type 1 diabetes in the DCCT and its follow-up EDIC study. They analyzed the impacts of these on measures of memory and psychomotor and mental efficiency. The study demonstrates that cognitive function declines with ageing in type 1 diabetes. The outcomes reveal that the relationship of glycaemia and blood pressure levels with cognitive decline implies that better management might preserve cognitive function.
