Cognitive development in children of adolescent mothers: The impact of socioeconomic risk and maternal sensitivity
Infant Behavior and Development Mar 04, 2018
Firk C, et al. - A comprehensive analysis of the variations in cognitive development between children of adolescent and adult mothers in their first 2 years of life was conducted. Additionally, the socioeconomic risk, such as educational and financial problems, and/or maternal sensitivity mediated developmental differences between children of adolescent and adult mothers was determined. It was shown that the maternal interactive behaviors served as both a simple predictor of cognitive development and as a mediator of the correlation between more distal variables, such as socioeconomic risk and cognitive development in adolescent mothers. Hence, a necessity arose for the promotion of the prevention and intervention programs for adolescent mothers during the early postpartum period in order to reduce socioeconomic problems and to enhance maternal interactive behaviors.
