Cognitive burden of common non-antiretroviral medications in HIV-infected women
Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes Aug 21, 2018
Rubin LH, et al. - Researchers investigated HIV+ and HIV− women regarding cognitive effects associated with non-antiretroviral medications with known neurocognitive-adverse effects (NC-AE medications). Outcomes suggested increased cognitive vulnerabilities to anticholinergic, anxiolytic/anticonvulsant, and opioid medications among HIV+ women. Some HIV-related cognitive impairments could be explained via the potential synergy between these medications and HIV. Findings thus emphasize the need to consider these specific types of medications as possible contributors to impaired cognitive performance in HIV+ women and assess the cost/benefit of treatment dosage for underlying conditions.
