Cognitive and pathological influences of tau pathology in Lewy Body Disorders
Annals of Neurology Jan 10, 2019
Coughlin D, et al. - Investigators studied 55 autopsy-confirmed Lewy body disorder (LBD) and 25 Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients to study the effects of co-occurring Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology on anatomic distribution of α-synuclein (SYN) pathology. They also assessed if the co-occurrence of neocortical tau pathology in LBD was linked to detrimental cognitive performance. They discovered that LBD patients with AD co-pathology had increased neocortical SYN pathology and that regional tau pathology was linked to cognitive performance in LBD dementia, which could have deviated from pure AD. They have also found that tau co-pathology contributes to the heterogeneity of cognitive impairment in LBD.
