Cognitive and pathological influences of tau pathology in Lewy Body Disorders
Annals of Neurology Feb 03, 2019
Coughlin D, et al. - Investigators analyzed 55 autopsy-confirmed Lewy body disorder (LBD) and 25 Alzheimer's disease (AD) cases to test the premise that co-occurring pathology of Alzheimer disease (AD) affects the anatomic distribution of pathology of α-synuclein (SYN) and that co-occurring neocortical tau pathology in LBDs is linked to worse cognitive performance and occurs in a pattern that differs from AD. Findings revealed that there is greater neocortical SYN pathology in LBD patients with AD copathology. They suggested that regional tau pathology in LBD dementia is related to cognitive performance and its distribution might differ from pure AD. Data reported that tau copathology has a distinct way of contributing to the heterogeneity of cognitive impairment in LBD.
