Clinicopathological features and prognosis of familial papillary thyroid carcinoma – A large-scale, matched, case-control study
Clinical Endocrinology Jan 20, 2019
Cao J, et al. - Researchers conducted a matched-case comparative study to determine the clinicopathological features and prognosis of familial nonmedullary thyroid cancer (FNMTC). For this investigation, 372 patients were enrolled in the study group with familial papillary thyroid carcinoma (FPTC) and another 372 patients with sporadic PTC were enrolled as controls and matched for gender, age, tumor/node/metastasis (TNM) staging and approximate follow-up duration. According to the findings, a familial history of PTC designates an increase in biological aggressiveness and patients in the second generation can manifest the “genetic anticipation” phenomenon. Currently, the data available is not enough to support a more aggressive approach to FPTC. A family history of PTC, however, is an independent risk factor for recurrence in papillary thyroid microcarcinoma patients.
