Clinicopathologic findings in gynecologic proliferations of the appendix
Human Pathology Nov 03, 2019
Noor M, et al. - A total of 72 cases of appendiceal gynecologic proliferations with available slides were recognized in order to determine the clinicopathologic characteristics of appendiceal endometriosis, endosalpingiosis, and decidual lesions. All 51 endometriosis cases exhibited both glands and stroma, and 18 of them had hemosiderin. One case advanced to endometrioid adenocarcinoma. In all cases, endosalpingiosis was an accidental finding, which was confined to the serosa in four and extending intramurally in ten. Four of the seven individuals with a decidual lesion were pregnant, and two others were consuming oral contraceptives. The cases involved florid decidualized endometriosis (n = 5) and deciduosis (n = 2). Two cases extended transmurally and efficiently obliterated the appendix. Thus, conventional appendiceal endometriosis could have various clinical presentations. Individuals with it who come with acute appendicitis seldom acquire it elsewhere. Appendiceal endosalpingiosis is rare and efficiently accidental. Moreover, decidualized endometriosis may overtake the whole appendix.
