Clinical utility of beta-D-glucan testing for endogenous fungal chorioretinitis or endophthalmitis
Retina Feb 02, 2021
Ammar MJ, Carroll R, Kolomeyer A, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective case-control study to assess serum beta-D-glucan (BDG) as a biomarker for endogenous fungal eye infection. The sample consisted of 88 patients with a BDG test and eye examination at UPenn (2013–2018). Cases involved six chorioretinitis and four endophthalmitis patients, whereas controls involved 78 patients without chorioretinitis or endophthalmitis. BDG's sensitivity and specificity seem strong for endogenous fungal endophthalmitis and the negative predictive value is high; a larger ophthalmic study is suggested.
