Clinical risk factors for acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke in patients with infective endocarditis

Valenzuela I, et al. - Risk factors associated with ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes in patients with infective endocarditis were investigated via performing a retrospective patient chart review at a single US academic center of patients 18 years or older with infectious endocarditis and stroke diagnoses. Multivariate risk factors for ischemic stroke included prior stroke, Staphylococcus infection, mitral vegetations, and valvular abscess. Fungal infection, male sex and rheumatic heart disease were the identified risk factors for hemorrhagic stroke.
