Clinical presentation of incident syphilis among men who have sex with men taking HIV preexposure prophylaxis in Melbourne, Australia
Clinical Infectious Diseases Feb 04, 2021
Peel J, Chow EPF, Denham I, et al. - Via this study, researchers sought to report on the pattern of clinical presentation of syphilis among men who have sex with men (MSM) taking preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP). They examined if detection of syphilis is done through screening at scheduled 3-monthly PrEP clinic appointments or if primary or secondary syphilis presented at unscheduled interval visits. This was a retrospective study of 69 cases of early syphilis among 61 MSM taking PrEP during the study period. Findings suggest that a proportion of primary and secondary syphilis infections may remain undetected with screening syphilis at routine 3-monthly PrEP visits alone and hence indicate its insufficiency in averting onward transmission. They suggest the necessity for education of MSM taking PrEP concerning the risk of syphilis and symptom recognition in addition to access to syphilis testing between PrEP visits.
