Clinical predictors for deep vein thrombosis on admission in patients with intertrochanteric fractures: A retrospective study
BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders Apr 08, 2021
Fan J, Zhou F, Xu X, et al. - This study was carried out to assess the risk factors and the prevalence of pre-admission deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in elderly patients with intertrochanteric fractures. Between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2019, researchers conducted a retrospective study including a total of 788 elderly patients with an intertrochanteric fracture who were eligible for this study. They conducted color doppler ultrasonography for DVT detection at admission. They obtained all patients’ clinical data. The risk factors contributing to the occurrence of DVT were distinguished by using univariate analysis and stepwise backward multivariate logistic regression. In elderly Chinese patients, a high prevalence of pre-admission DVT was found with intertrochanteric fractures. Thus, for elderly patients with intertrochanteric fractures, surgeons should be aware of the high prevalence of DVT in order to prevent intraoperative and postoperative pulmonary embolism and other lethal complications.
