Clinical outcomes of proximal femoral fractures treated with a novel carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone intramedullary nail

Injury Jan 24, 2020

Takashima K, Nakahara I, Uemura K, et al. - Researchers constructed a novel carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR/PEEK) intramedullary nail for proximal femoral fractures, and assessed the efficacy as well as the safety of the CFR/PEEK intramedullary nail for use in the management of cases with proximal femoral fractures in this multicentre single-arm clinical trial including 20 patients (3 men, 17 women; mean age 85.0 years, range 72–95 years). The participants had proximal femoral fractures managed with the CFR/PEEK intramedullary nail. Participants were observed for > 4 months. Union of the bone fracture, time to bone union, bone nonunion, complications, implant failure, and the reoperation rate, were all assessed primary outcomes. Within 3.7 months, bone union was noted in 19 (95%). No adverse reactions or failures associated with the CFR/PEEK implant were reported. Furthermore, satisfactory clinical outcomes and a high union rate were afforded by the CFR/PEEK implant. Therefore, it is feasible to use the new CFR/PEEK intramedullary nail.
