Clinical outcomes of hospitalized adult patients with dermatologic manifestations of protein malnutrition and zinc deficiency
JAMA Dermatology Jun 17, 2019
Lee JJ, et al. - In this analysis, researchers analyzed clinical results of hospitalized adult patients with dermatologic manifestations of protein malnutrition and zinc deficiency. Due to increased physiological demand and consumption of nutrient-poor foods, protein-energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies in minerals like zinc and other essential vitamins can occur despite appropriate or excess total caloric intake. Findings suggested that dermatological manifestations of these deficiencies might result in severe, combined malnutrition and might be linked to poor outcomes when presenting in the hospitalized adult patient of an industrialized, developed nation.
