Irrespective of sufficient or excess total caloric consumption, protein-energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies in minerals such as zinc and other essential vitamins could happen because of heightened physiological demand and intake of nutrient-poor foods. When presenting in the hospitalized adult patient of an industrialized, developed nation, dermatologic manifestations of these deficiencies may infer severe, combined malnutrition and may be correlated with a poor outcomes.
