Clinical outcomes of 1,625 patients with primary aldosteronism subtyped with adrenal vein sampling
Hypertension Sep 12, 2019
Rossi GP, Rossitto G, Amar L, et al. - Researchers evaluated the clinical advantages of adrenal venous sampling (AVS)—a test suggested by guidelines for primary aldosteronism (PA) patients seeking surgical cure— in an extensive registry of PA patients submitted to AVS. They selected participants from 19 tertiary referral centers located in Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. Data from 1,625 consecutive patients submitted to AVS were analyzed. In this study, suboptimal AVS use was suggested by the observed low rate of adrenalectomy and cure of hypertension in PA patients seeking surgical cure, which was likely associated with problems in patient selection, technical success, and AVS data interpretation. AVS-guided adrenalectomy provided better outcomes and, therefore, efforts are required to enhance the diagnostic use of this test that is crucial for the identification of surgical PA candidates.
