Clinical features related to rapid cycling and one-year euthymia in bipolar disorder patients: A multicenter treatment survey for bipolar disorder in psychiatric clinics (MUSUBI)

Journal of Psychiatric Research Oct 08, 2020

Kato M, Adachi N, Kubota Y, et al. - Using data from a large sample (N = 2,609) from a multicenter treatment survey on bipolar disorder (BD) in psychiatric clinics (MUSUBI), this study attempted to distinguish the clinical background and prescription features of patients in the states of current rapid cycling (RC) and one-year euthymia (OYE). Compared to non-RC patients, current RC was significantly higher in females, had a younger age of onset, functional impairments, and a higher rate of neurodevelopmental disorder and physical comorbidity. OYE was correlated with a lower proportion of females, older age, higher occupational status, and lower rate of suicide ideation, psychotic symptoms, personality disorder, and alcohol or substance abuse. Antidepressant prescription rates were lower in OYE than in RC. In ≥80% of cases, mood stabilizers were prescribed; antipsychotics were prescribed in half of the cases, moreso with RC and less with OYE. This study's findings demonstrate that RC and OYE generally display opposing features, but the details of the opposite parameters are distinctive.
