Clinical features of transverse myelitis associated with systemic lupus erythematosus
Lupus Feb 23, 2020
Zhang S, Wang Z, Zhao J, et al. - Researchers tried to find out the clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of systemic lupus erythematosus with transverse myelitis (SLE-TM) in a relatively large patient series. Between 1993 and 2018, a retrospective study was conducted to include a total of 45 SLE-TM individuals treated as inpatients and outpatients at Peking Union Medical College Hospital. This study compared SLE-TM individuals with 180 controls, and SLE-TM individuals with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) were compared with those without NMOSD. They found significant differences in disease characteristics between SLE-TM individuals with and without NMOSD. It was noted that SLE and NMOSD tended to be co-morbidities. For SLE-TM, initial severe neurological impairment, extensive spinal cord lesions, hyper-inflammation, and delayed steroid impulse treatment could be predictors of poor results.
