Palioura S, et al. - Researchers sought to evaluate the clinical features, antibiotic susceptibility profile, and outcomes of the keratitis arising due to Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Because of the resistance of S. maltophilia to aminoglycosides and cephalosporins, which were typically used for empiric broad-spectrum gram-negative coverage as fortified solutions, infectious keratitis caused by S. maltophilia presented as a treatment challenge. Fluoroquinolones and polymyxin B/trimethoprim ought to be considered instead, in cases of S. maltophilia infection.
