Clinical epidemiology of adults with moderate traumatic brain injury
Critical Care Medicine Apr 22, 2018
Watanitanon A, et al. - Researchers described admission patterns, treatments, and outcomes in patients with moderate traumatic brain injury by retrospectively examining adults with moderate traumatic brain injury (International Classification of Diseases, Ninth revision codes and admission Glasgow Coma Scale score of 9–13) in the National Trauma Data Bank between 2007 and 2014. Deterioration, need for neurocritical care and poor outcomes were reported for many patients. Relative to those without poor discharge outcomes, hypotension at admission, lower admission Glasgow Coma Scale, higher Injury Severity Score, and polytrauma were more likely in those with a poor discharge outcome. Overall, for this vulnerable group of patients, an urgent need was realized for optimization of care and outcomes.
