Clinical effectiveness of aspirin as multimodal thromboprophylaxis in primary total hip and knee arthroplasty: A review of 6078 cases
Journal of Arthroplasty Apr 17, 2019
Ghosh A, et al. - Data were assessed to study the effectiveness, safety profile, and rate of adverse thromboembolic events of aspirin as extended out-of-hospital pharmacological anticoagulation for elective primary total hip and knee arthroplasty cases vs published data for low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH). Investigators observed the primary outcome measure of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism within 90 days postoperatively of 1.11%. They found comparable secondary outcome rates of wound infection, bleeding complications, readmission rate, and mortality in aspirin use when compared to published outcomes following LMWH use. They implied aspirin as an effective and safe regime in preventing venous thromboembolism with respect to the risk of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism when compared to LMWH. They recorded aspirin use a cheaper option as compared to LMWH with associated potential cost savings.
