Clinical characteristics and depression score response after parathyroidectomy in primary hyperparathyroidism

Kearns AE, et al. - A prospective observational case-control study on patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) undergoing parathyroidectomy or thyroid surgery, the contributors intended to examine the correlation amongst biochemical and clinical variables and the change in depression scores and in specific symptoms post parathyroidectomy. No difference in the number with a depression diagnosis between PHPT and the thyroid group at enrollment was noticed. Furthermore, no difference post surgery was noted. In both somatic and cognitive domains, improved depression scores after parathyroidectomy for PHPT was concluded. The response was predicted by baseline severity of depression.
