Clinical and etiologic characteristics of de novo uveitis in patients aged 60 years and above: Experience of a French tertiary center

Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology Aug 25, 2019

Grumet P, Kerever S, Gilbert T, et al. - In patients ≥ 60 years old, researchers characterized the features of de novo uveitis. The study sample consisted of patients with uveitis followed in the tertiary center over a 14-year period. For this retrospective review, patients aged 60 to 70 years and patients aged > 70 years were compared. In total, 283/1044 patients with uveitis were ≥ 60 years of age. The most frequent etiologies were idiopathic uveitis and sarcoidosis. After the age of 60 years, sarcoidosis was significantly more frequent. In this age group, in contrast to uveitis and spondyloarthritis associated with HLA B27, intraocular lymphoma and herpes virus infection were also more prevalent. Idiopathic uveitis and presumed sarcoidosis were more frequent than in the 60–70-year age group in patients > 70 years old. Investigators found that sarcoidosis is the leading cause of non-idiopathic uveitis in older patients. Idiopathic uveitis and other entities are responsible for less than two-thirds of cases. After 60 years of age, ophthalmologic entities are rare. The features of uveitis after 70 years of age were also reported for the first time.
