Clinical and epidemiological characteristics of childhood vitiligo: A study of 701 patients from Brazil
International Journal of Dermatology Sep 30, 2019
dos Santos Martins CP, et al. - By reviewing data records of patients under the age of 18 in which disease onset occurred before 13 years of age, researchers conducted this transverse study to assess the clinical and epidemiological features of childhood vitiligo. Data reported the predominance of females (62%). Generalized vitiligo was the most common subtype. Disease onset average age was 5.9 years. Head/neck was the most affected initial site. Investigators found that the Koebner phenomenon was present in 38.2%, 67.0% of patients had emotional triggering factors, 17.4% halo nevus, and 6.5% of patients had associated autoimmune disease. Vitiligo family history was noted in 16.9% of patients, and 20.1% of patients reported stability. The presence of positive family history did not affect the age of onset significantly. A significant difference was found between segmental vitiligo and nonsegmental vitiligo regarding the age of onset, Koebner phenomenon, hypothyroidism, anti-TPO antibodies, family history of psoriasis, and halo nevus. The research introduces a large number of patients, helping the Brazilian population to elucidate the peculiarities of childhood vitiligo.
