Circumstances of death of opioid users being treated with naltrexone
Addiction Jul 14, 2019
Darke S, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers assessed the clinical features and circumstances of death of patients receiving naltrexone treatment for opioid dependence. They also assessed the blood toxicology of cases including naltrexone concentrations, presence of other drugs, and to compare morphine levels in the presence and absence of naltrexone. In this study, the National Coronial Information System (2000-2017) was to find 74 cases, 81.1% male, with a mean age of 32.5 years. In Australia, during 2000-2017, opioid toxicity was identified as the main reason for death among people undergoing naltrexone treatment for opioid dependence, most of the cases having been maintained on oral naltrexone. The significance of treatment compliance was reflected via cases in which naltrexone was not detected. The possibility of overdose while naltrexone medication was maintained was suggested by deaths due to opioid toxicity where naltrexone was present.
