Circulating microRNAs as potential biomarkers for genetic generalized epilepsies: A three microRNA panel
European Journal of Neurology Jan 30, 2020
Martins-Ferreira R, Chaves J, Carvalho C, et al. - Researchers conducted this receiver operating characteristic curve analysis to analyze serum expression levels of three epilepsy-related miRNAs, miR-146a, miR-155, and miR-132, in a genetic generalized epilepsies (GGEs) cohort. In addition, they explored the associations between miRNAs and clinicopathological characteristics like age, age of onset, disease duration, photosensitivity, refractoriness, and juvenile myoclonic epilepsy diagnosis. In the serum of 79 GGE individuals (35.1 ± 12.4 years) and 67 healthy individuals (42.4 ± 10.1 years), miR-146a, miR-155, and miR-132 were quantified by a real-time polymerase chain reaction. For GGE patients, the serum levels of miR-146a and miR-155 were significantly upregulated compared with controls. The findings suggest that miR-146a, miR-155, and miR-132 can participate in GGE epileptogenesis. For the first time, a panel of three circulating miRNAs with potential value as a GGE biomarker is reported. New biomarkers can help identify new targets for treatment and lead to improved quality of life for patients through early detection and a more reliable prognosis.
