Cigarette smoking and risk of herpes zoster: A population‐based cohort study in Taiwan
Clinical and Experimental Dermatology Mar 31, 2021
Dai YX, Yeh FY, Shen YJ, et al. - The correlation between cigarette smoking and herpes zoster (HZ) was examined. From four rounds (2001, 2005, 2009, and 2013) of the Taiwan National Health Interview Survey, they collected 57,641 participants. The National Health Insurance database led to identification of 3,346 cases developing HZ among participants during the observation period. Findings revealed significant correlation of current smoking with a decreased risk of developing HZ. Among current smokers, a trend toward a reduced risk of HZ was observed with increasing numbers of cigarettes per day, years of smoking, and cumulative pack‐years of smoking.
