Chronic pain is underestimated and undertreated in dialysis patients: A retrospective case study
Hemodialysis International Feb 14, 2019
Bassat OKB, et al. - In view of a high prevalence of significant chronic pain in chronic kidney disease patients and its association with morbidity and mortality, researchers retrospectively evaluated the incidence and treatment of pain in the dialysis unit of their tertiary referral center. The cohort included 147 patients, 66% of these reported significant (VAS >40) chronic pain during the preceding 3 months. Chronic pain medications were provided to only 33% of the patients. The most frequently used comprised pregabalin or weak opioids. These findings suggest that chronic pain is markedly undertreated in dialysis patients, despite its significant adverse impact and high prevalence.
