Choroidal vascular changes in arteritic and non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy
American Journal of Ophthalmology Apr 11, 2019
Pellegrini M, et al. - In this retrospective cross-sectional study, researchers examined macular and optic nerve head optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans of 20 subjects with arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (A-AION) secondary to giant cell arteritis (biopsy-proven), 20 cases with non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NA-AION), and 20 control subjects to assess the choroidal vascularity index (CVI) among these candidates. They recorded significantly lower macular and peripapillary CVI in subjects with A-AION vs both cases with NA-AION (respectively, 67.17±2.35 vs 69.66±4.18; 63.51±3.29 vs 67.67±3.07) and controls (respectively, 67.17±2.35 vs 70.00 ± 2.95; 63.51±3.29 vs 68.69 ± 3.19). No significant difference in macular and peripapillary CVI was observed between subjects with NA-AION and controls.
